Men's Hoops Announces Schedule

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The 2021-22 Covenant men's basketball schedule is set and includes a tough challenge for head coach Neal Young and his squad.

The Scots are slated for 25 regular season games, 13 inside Barnes PE Center, and a pair of Division I exhibition contests this season.

Covenant opens the season on Nov. 6 at home against Asbury (2 p.m.), marking the first time the Scots have started a season at home since 2016-17. It will also be the first of two home games against Asbury as the Eagles will pay another visit to Lookout Mountain on Feb. 15.

The Scots will step aside from regular season play twice during the year to face NCAA Division I foes. Covenant plays at Chattanooga on Nov. 23 (11 a.m.) before heading to Statesboro, Ga., on Dec. 18 to face Georgia Southern.

After opening with Asbury on Nov. 6, Covenant hosts region power Centre on Nov. 9.  The Scots will also host non-conference games against Rhodes (Dec. 4), Emory (Dec. 7), MUW (Jan. 29), and Pfeiffer (Feb. 1). Emory is ranked No. 13 in the preseason D3hoops.com Top 25.

Key non-conference road games includes a trip to Sewanee's Lon Varnell Classic on Nov. 19-20 (Birmingham Southern, Sewanee) and Roanoke College's Cregger Invitational on Dec. 29-30 (Keene State, Messiah/Roanoke).

USA South play begins on Dec. 11 at Huntingdon. Covenant will host defending USA South West Division champion Maryville on Feb. 19 for Senior Day. LaGrange (Jan. 21), Huntingdon (Jan. 22), and Piedmont (Feb. 9) all make trips to Lookout Mountain.

The USA South Tournament is set to begin on Feb. 22 with the top four teams from each division qualifying.

NOTES:

  • Covenant opens the season at home for the first time since 2016-17 season when the Scots upset nationally-ranked Emory.
  • Covenant will face two new opponents in Keene State (Dec. 29) and MUW (Jan. 8 and Jan. 29). The Scots have faced Roanoke one time (2011) and Messiah twice (1970, 1976) in program history.
  • The Scots last played Chattanooga in an exhibition in 2019. The game will count as regular season for the Mocs.
  • Covenant and Georgia Southern have never met in men's basketball (regular season or exhibition). That contest will also be a regular season game for the Eagles.
