Women's Soccer Sends Seniors Out With Victory

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- On Senior Night, it was appropriate that the 10 seniors on the Covenant women's soccer team played a major role in a victory. Katelyn Newsome, Mo Cross, and Mae Mae Johnson all scored while Kara Lee and Hannah Weichbrodt added assists as Covenant rolled to a 4-0 win over Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon.

Before the match, all 10 seniors were honored for the efforts both on and off the field during their time as members of the Lady Scots team. Newsome, Cross, Johnson, Lee, Weichbrodt, Sheri Koenig, Kathryn Allison, Rachel Carleton, Amy Dykstra, and Persie Bray were all recognized before the match.

When play started, Covenant quickly asserted itself as the better team. Newsome scored in the 13th minute when she received a pass from Weichbrodt inside the box and converted from short distance to make it 1-0. The goal was her seventh of the season.

A little more than two minutes later, Cross found the back of the net after receiving a deflection off the Wesleyan keeper for her fourth goal of the year.

In the second half, it was Johnson's turn for the spotlight. The senior scored after a short pass from teammate Lee for her second goal of the season to make it 3-0 Lady Scots. Not to be outdone by the seniors, freshman Ruth Terry capped the scoring in the 73rd minute when she beat her defender and knocked in a shot to put Covenant up 4-0.

Covenant (12-3-1, 7-1 GSAC) had complete control of the match as they outshot the visitors 33-0, 18-0 in corner kicks, and 18-0 in shots on goal.

Wesleyan (0-15, 0-8 GSAC) keeper Abby Stephens was kept busy all afternoon as she tallied 14 saves.

Covenant will play one last regular season home match on Monday, October 22 when they host the No. 1-ranked Emory University Eagles. Match time is set for 7:00 p.m. at Scotland Yard. Live stats and video will be provided here.
