LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Three first half scores were enough for No. 1-ranked Emory University to come away with a 3-0 win over Covenant on Monday night at Scotland Yard.
The loss for Covenant is its second against a team ranked No. 1 in NCAA Division III. The Lady Scots were defeated 4-0 at Messiah College on August 31. Emory remains perfect at 11-0-4 for the season, while Covenant drops to 12-4-1.
Emory started the scoring in the very first minute of play when Kelly Costopoulos put her shot in the lower left corner of the net for a goal to put Emory up 1-0. Emory then added a second goal just a few minutes later when Veronica Romero took a pass from Lauren Gorodetsky and got her shot past the outstretched arms of Covenant keeper Hannah Bales to give the Eagles a 2-0 edge.
Before halftime, Emory would strike again to make it 3-0. In the 38th minute, Jordan Morell received a lofted cross from Claudia Rowe and headed the ball in for the score.
Covenant played with Emory in the second half, keeping the match scoreless, but could not muster enough offense to mount a potential rally. Emory outshot the Lady Scots 18-5 and 8-2 in shots on goal.
Bales made five saves for the Lady Scots. Rachel Bernard and Kathryn Allison each had a shot on goal. Ruth Terry and Katelyn Newsome combined to take three shots.
Covenant will have a quick turnaround as they will face Spelman College on Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. in Decatur, Ga.
