LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Following a devastating 2-0 home loss to Bryan College in the home finale, and a dismal 5-2 defeat at Barry College in the final game of the regular season, the chances of Covenant playing host to the 2010 NCCAA Regional Tournament looked slim.
However, the Scots still managed to accrue enough points during their 11-game unbeaten streak and 13-6 season record to finish slightly ahead of Campbellsville University in the standings. Thus, the team has earned hosting privileges as the number one seed for the postseason tourney. The tournament, which is scheduled to take place at Scotland Yard on November 19-20, will see four teams – Covenant, Campbellsville, King, and Oakland City – square off in a single-elimination battle for an NCCAA National Tournament birth. Last year, Covenant defeated Oakland City in the regional final to earn a trip to Florida for the national tournament, where the Scots came away with third place honors.
"Our goal from the beginning of this season was to make it back to Florida so that we can build on our third-place finish from last season," said Head Coach Nathan Pifer. "There are good teams in both the regional tournament and in the national tournament, and the fact that we are getting to host the region tournament this year will hopefully give us an extra boost as we enter the postseason."
Covenant will play in a semi-final rematch of last year's championship game when it hosts Oakland City at 5:00pm on Friday, November 19, while the championship game is set for 2:00pm on Saturday against the winner of the King vs. Campbellsville match.
