LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. -- Covenant men's soccer fell in a defensive slugfest, 1-0, to visiting Asbury on Saturday afternoon, dropping to the No. 2 seed in the CCS Tournament.
A lone 19th minute goal was the difference in this match, but senior
J.T. Gard was simply stellar on Senior Day, making four key saves to keep it as close as possible. Fellow senior
Eli Daniel likewise played all 90 minutes defensively, and did excellently at preventing attacks.
Â
The Scots' (5-8-2, 3-1-1 CCS) offense attempted to get on the board first in the match, as
Henry Parker and Daniel got shots away, but keeper Tolan Beaty was up to the task for the Eagles (6-4-4, 4-1-0 CCS), keeping it scoreless.
In the early 19th minute, a brief opening in Covenant's defense allowed Eli Redpath to fire one past the diving Gard for an early 1-0 lead.
In the late 30th minute,
Carlton McClure and
Jackson Bostrom missed the frame 25 second apart, but a corner kick chance found Wallis, who got away a clean redirect, but Beaty made another good stop to keep it 1-0, where it stayed going into the half.
In the second half, Gard shined in net, making three more saves and forcing another deflection to keep it at a 1-0 score. However, the Asbury defense proved to be too strong on the other side, as they held Covenant to just one shot on net in the second half, which was saved by Beaty, to preserve their 1-0 win.
With the win, Asbury clinched the No. 1 seed in the CCS Tournament.
