Box Score 2 NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- Covenant softball gained a run-rule victory to highlight their second day in Myrtle Beach on Tuesday, winning 10-2 over Cairn in six innings and then falling to Penn College 6-5.
GAME ONE: Covenant 10, Cairn 2 (6 innings)
Kallie Branum walked off game one of the day for the Scots in the bottom of the sixth inning, as Covenant won 10-2.
The Scots scored nine unanswered runs to earn the walk-off win, getting multi-hit efforts from
Julie Mavity,
Charley Clark,
Lily Campbell, and
Tisha Holland, with Mavity and Clark combining to drive home five runs.
Mavity (1-0) also got the win in her first career start in the circle, going four innings and allowing two unearned runs, striking out six.
After going down 2-1 in the third, the Scots needed to break through offensively.
They shattered through.
A successful double steal brought home the tying run, and then a four-run fourth gave Covenant a lead that would hold.
Myla Still added on in the fifth with her RBI double, and then a Mavity sacrifice fly and Clark single made it 9-2.Â
Campbell led off the sixth with a perfectly placed double down the right field line, and after advancing to third on a wild pitch, Branum ended matters with her bullet RBI double down the left field line.
Sydney Wright (0-2) got the loss for Cairn.
GAME TWO: Penn College 6, Covenant 5
The Scots saw Penn College score the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh, falling 6-5 in game two.
Charley Clark and
Cassidi Phillips added multi-hit games to their ledger in this one, with
Julie Mavity driving in three RBIs.Â
This game, it was Covenant who got on the board first with a two-RBI single from Mavity and an RBI hit-by-pitch from
Madison Taylor to go up 3-0 in the second.
However, the Wildcats answered back with a three-spot of their own in the top of the third, making things even at three.
The Scots came back to add two more between the fourth and fifth innings, as an RBI single from Phillips in the fourth and a sacrifice fly from Mavity made it 5-3.
Unfortunately, Penn College was able to manufacture a three-run rally in the top of the seventh, holding on in the bottom of the inning to win it.
Clark (3-7) was handed the loss, abut just two of the runs she allowed were earned. She struck out six. Mackenzi Tice (3-0) got the win in relief for the Wildcats.
