WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The JDL Fast Track lived up to its name for the Covenant track and field teams on Monday at the Atlantic Independent Indoor Championships as the Scots set nine program records in the meet.
The meet consisted of USA South member institutions, as the conference does not sponsor indoor track and field. The women's team placed third, out of nine, with 70.5 points while the men were eighth with 24 points.
Elysse Carrillo was a part of three program record marks. The junior broke the 200-meter and 400-meter indoor records and was part of a record-setting 4x400 relay team. Carrillo finished first in the 400-meter with her program-best time of 1:01.42 and then bested the program mark in the 200-meter at 27.80 to place fourth.
Carrillo had the opening leg of the 4x400 team that placed first with a program-record time of 4:20.22.
Anna Baker,
Maggie Henry, and
S.K. Lipperd followed Carrillo's start to secure the top spot.
Lipperd set a program record herself on Monday as she won the 800-meter event with a time of 2:24.92 that topped her old program record by less than one second. The senior won both of her 800-meter events during the indoor season. Lipperd also had a personal record time of 5:25.43 in the mile run that placed her third.
Maddie Mitchell had the fifth program record for the women's team as she finished fifth in the shot put with a mark of 9.46 meters.
The men had four program records on the day.
Ben Mellott set the program record in the 5,000-meter event with his second-place run and time of 15:34.09. In the 3,000-meter,
Josiah Mellott topped his brother's program record from earlier this season with a time of 9:09.40 that put him fifth overall.
Covenant placed four runners in the top-10 in the mile run, paced by
Seth Bergeron's program-record time of 4:30.86 that put him fourth.
Benjamin Jones (4:38.90) was eighth followed in ninth by
Micaiah Allison (4:40.06) and 10th by
Nate Moore (4:45.76).
Bergeron and Moore were also part of the record-setting 4x400 relay squad joined by
Josh Leak and
Noah Norman as they came in at 3:39.09. Bergeron also had a personal record time in the 800-meter at 2:02.54 to place fifth. Norman (24.28) and Leak (24.29) had personal-record times in the 200-meter.
Emma Christensen placed fourth in the high jump at 1.42 meters and Baker was fifth in the 60-meter hurdles at 10.94, becoming the first Covenant athletes to compete in those events.
In women's distance events,
Brooke McDonald placed fifth in the 5,000-meter with a time of 21:42.24 and
Mattie Parker was sixth in the 3,000-meter at 11:19.25.
