Volleyball Knocks off Piedmont in Three Sets

DEMOREST, Ga. -- Behind 13 and 12 kills apiece from Ginny Moore and Chelsea VanDyk, the Covenant volleyball team defeated Piedmont 3-0 (25-23, 25-17, 25-16) in USA South action on Wednesday night inside Cave Arena.

With the victory, the Lady Scots move to 11-6 overall and 1-1 in conference play. It is Covenant's first victory over Piedmont since 2012 and the first win in Demorest, Ga., since 1996. Piedmont drops to 10-4 overall and 2-1 in league play.

Moore tallied 13 kills to go along with nine digs, while VanDyk had a dozen kills and a .385 hitting percentage. Cora Schroeder had nine kills, while Schuyler Moore had a match-high 28 assists with eight digs. Chloe Carlson led the Covenant defense with 22 digs and Christina Argaez added 12. Stephanie Kirkpatrick added 17 assists and six digs in the win.

Covenant had 22 kills in the opening set as they scored the final three points of the set for the win. Trailing 23-22, Hannah Rogers and Ginny Moore had back-to-back kills for Covenant to take a one-point lead before a Piedmont error gave the game to the Lady Scots.

In the second set, Covenant broke a 10-10 tie by scoring seven of the following 10 points, capped by a Schroeder kill, for a 17-13 advantage. After Piedmont cut the Lady Scots' lead to 24-17, Schuyler Moore ended the frame with a kill to give Covenant a 2-0 match lead.

Covenant found itself in another tightly played third set before running away midway through the game. The Lady Scots held a 14-13 lead but ended the set on an 11-3 run to end the match. Ginny Moore had three kills and Rogers added two more during the stretch.

As a team, Covenant totaled 50 kills for a .256 hitting percentage, while Piedmont was limited to 26 kills and a .111 hitting clip.

Kaitlin Norman had 10 kills for Piedmont, who also got 13 assists from Xandy Green and 16 digs from Katie Faith.
