LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant volleyball team picked up a pair of USA South victories on Saturday as they hosted a conference quad-match. The Lady Scots swept Huntingdon 3-0 (25-12, 25-10, 25-16) in the day's first match before defeating LaGrange in three sets (25-13, 25-16, 25-11) in the final match.
With the wins, Covenant moves to 13-6 overall on the year and 3-1 in league play.
Against Huntingdon, Covenant was led by Chelsea VanDyk's seven kills and three solo blocks as the Lady Scots cruised to the win. Stephanie Kirkpatrick had 17 assists, while Schuyler Moore had 10 assists, 10 digs and five kills. Chloe Carlson led the way with 11 digs.
Covenant took advantage of 10 Huntingdon attack errors in the first set and nine kills of its own in the opening set to take a 25-12 win. Covenant produced 11 kills in the second set to take a commanding 2-0 lead in the match.
After Huntingdon scored the opening point of the third set, Covenant rattled off seven in a row with two kills from Jessica Seehorn and one from Cora Schroeder. The Lady Scots had a match-high 12 kills in the final set as they took the match.
Huntingdon (4-9, 0-3 USA South) got five kills from Bria Rochelle and 16 digs from Lauren Condon.
In the second match, Ginny Moore had a match-high eight kills to go along with 12 digs to lead the Lady Scots. Schuyler Moore added 19 assists and five kills while Kirkpatrick chipped in 11 assists and three digs. Schroeder had seven kills and VanDyk had six kills, four service aces and five digs. Carlson produced a match-high 14 digs and Christina Argaez tallied six service aces.
Covenant had double-digit kills in each of the three sets. The Lady Scots had 11 kills in the opening set and never trailed. Covenant jumped out to a 16-6 lead and ended the set with three straight points, capped by an Argaez service ace.
The second set saw the teams go back-and-forth in the first few points before Covenant went on an 8-2 run, that ended with another Argaez ace, to go ahead 13-7. LaGrange cut its deficit to 20-16 but, after a Covenant timeout, the Lady Scots scored the final five points as Argaez recorded consecutive aces.
Covenant would lead from the start in the third set as they tallied 13 kills and a hitting percentage of .407 to grab a 25-11 victory.
Katie Chancellor led LaGrange (8-11, 1-3 USA South) with seven kills, while Mary Katherine Schmitz had 15 assists.
Covenant will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 3 in a USA South quad-match at Averett in Danville, Va. The Lady Scots face Averett at 1 p.m., before squaring off with Ferrum at 5 p.m.
