LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- On a night dedicated to the seniors of the Covenant volleyball team, the host Lady Scots rebounded from a sluggish start to defeat Oglethorpe 3-1 (19-25, 25-14, 25-18, 25-23) on Tuesday night inside Barnes PE Center.
Before the match, Covenant recognized its two seniors Stephanie Kirkpatrick and Pretoria den Boer. Both have played significant roles in the Lady Scots' recent trend of success which includes four straight seasons of 20 or more wins.
When the match got underway, Covenant (25-9) got off to a rough start as Oglethorpe took the opening set 25-19. But the Lady Scots responded and tied the match with a second set win. In that second set, Covenant scored nine of the final 10 points to secure the victory. Schuyler Moore had three kills during that stretch.
Covenant opened up an early 7-1 lead in the third set and never trailed as it took a 2-1 match lead. The Lady Scots had 11 kills in the set and their highest hitting percentage of any set at .250. The fourth set saw eight ties and five lead changes, but it was Covenant that rallied late to take the win. Trailing 23-22, the Lady Scots scored three straight points, capped by a combined block from Chelsea VanDyk and Schuyler Moore, to end the match.
Ginny Moore led Covenant with 16 kills and 16 digs, her 12th double-double of the season. Cora Schroeder added 14 kills and four digs, while Schuyler Moore had eight kills, 13 assists and 14 digs. Chloe Carlson tallied 13 digs.
In her final home match, Kirkpatrick had a match-high 21 assists to go along with nine digs. Den Boer had two total blocks, one solo and one assisted, with a kill and a dig.
Anna Marie DiSalvo led Oglethorpe (15-17) with nine kills and 12 digs. Katie Stewart recorded 19 assists.
Covenant will open the USA South Tournament on Friday in Martinsville, Va., against Methodist, the No. 3 seed from the North. Match time is set for 7 p.m. The Lady Scots are the No. 2 seed from the South in the tournament.
