MARYVILLE, Tenn. -- The Covenant volleyball team saw its nine-match win streak come to an end on Tuesday night as the Lady Scots fell to USA South leader Maryville 3-1 (25-21, 24-26, 25-18, 25-8).
The win streak, which matched a program record, stops for Covenant as they move to 18-7 overall and 7-2 in conference play. Both conference losses have come to Maryville. Maryville remains undefeated in USA South play at 9-0 and goes to 16-8 on the year. The northern Scots have not lost a conference contest since 2012.
The four set match was the first one Covenant has played all year in 25 contests.
Reigning USA South Rookie of the Week Ginny Moore led the Lady Scots with 13 kills to go along with nine digs. Stephanie Kirkpatrick and Schuyler Moore had 15 and 14 assists, respectively, while Chloe Carlson tallied 11 digs. Schuyler Moore also had eight kills. Covenant was without the services of Chelsea VanDyk, who is suffering from an injury.
After falling in the first set, Covenant trailed early in the second set before rallying for the win. Trailing 17-11, the Lady Scots scored seven of the next eight points to tie the set at 18. Ginny Moore had two kills during that stretch, while Hannah Rogers added another. The two teams would go back-and-forth for the rest of the game until Covenant took three straight points, with kills from Pretoria den Boer and Rogers, to take the set 26-24.
Covenant had an early lead in the third set, but Maryville would lead for much of the set as they took a 2-1 match lead. Maryville jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the fourth set to capture the match.
Julia Vineyard had 10 kills to lead Maryville, while Morgan Hall recorded 20 assists and Mallory Bonee had 14 digs.
As a team, Covenant had 38 kills and had a hitting percentage below .200 for the first time in six matches.
Covenant will travel to Raleigh, N.C., on Saturday for a USA South quad match against William Peace (10 a.m.) and North Carolina Wesleyan (2 p.m.)
