Volleyball Records 4th Straight 20-Win Season With Two Wins on Saturday

RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Covenant volleyball team rebounded from a four-set loss to Maryville on Tuesday with wins over William Peace and North Carolina Wesleyan in USA South quad-match on Saturday at the Hermann Center in Raleigh, N.C.

Covenant defeated William Peace in the day's first match with set scores of 25-17, 25-17, 26-14. The Lady Scots then knocked off N.C. Wesleyan 3-1 (25-15, 25-19, 24-26, 25-23) to conclude the day.

The Lady Scots have won 11 of their last 12 contests to move to 20-7 on the year and 9-2 in conference play. It is the fourth straight year that Covenant has won 20 or more games, continuing a program record streak.

In the day's first match against William Peace, no player recorded double-digit kills for Covenant, but eight different players had at least one kill. Ginny Moore had nine kills, while Cora Schroeder tallied eight and Pretoria den Boer and Hannah Rogers each had four. Schuyler Moore recorded five kills, 18 assists, two aces, three digs and an assisted block.

Defensively, Chloe Carlson had 12 digs and Ginny Moore added 11.

Covenant managed the victory despite hitting just .109 as a team, its lowest hitting percentage of the year in a three-set win, but held a 33-23 edge over the host Pacers in total kills. The Lady Scots also held a significant margin at the service line as they registered 10 aces, led by three from Jessica Seehorn, compared to William Peace's two.

The first set saw Covenant jump out to an 11-2 lead, capped by a Schuyler Moore ace, and the Lady Scots would extend that lead to 19-5 later in the game. William Peace closed the gap to 24-17, but Covenant finished the set on a Pacer error.

Once again the Lady Scots got out to a hot start in set No. 2 as they took a 7-2 lead after a Ginny Moore kill. Covenant would keep a comfortable lead throughout the set to gain a 2-0 match advantage.

Covenant broke a 14-14 tie in the third set by going on a 5-1 scoring run to grab a 19-15 lead. A Schuyler Moore kill made it 23-20 but William Peace rallied to knot the score again at 24 all. Schuyler Moore came up big as she produced her fifth kill of the match to give the Lady Scots a one-point edge before a William Peace error gave Covenant the victory.

William Peace (10-17, 7-5 USA South) was led by Megan Mansfield and Nicole Phillips with seven kills apiece. Baylee Maughon added 16 assists and Carson Williams 14 digs.

In the second match, Ginny Moore had a career-high 23 kills and Schuyler Moore recorded her third triple-double of the year to lead Covenant over N.C. Wesleyan 3-1.

In addition to her 23 kills, Ginny Moore had 14 digs in the contest. Schuyler Moore tallied 14 kills, 28 assists and 12 digs. Christina Argaez added 14 digs and a match-high five aces, while Carlson and Jaclyn Stuart had 12 and 10 digs, respectively. Stephanie Kirkpatrick picked up 23 assists in the win.

Covenant held a 59-36 edge in kills and had a hitting percentage of .184. The Lady Scots also had 11 service aces and an 82-77 margin in digs.

The Lady Scots had 16 kills in the opening set and controlled the game from the outset. Covenant built a 16-8 lead after a Schroeder kill and cruised to the set win. The Lady Scots never trailed in the second set as they jumped out 9-3 in the early going and again eased to a set win and a 2-0 match edge.

N.C. Wesleyan battled back in the third set as the two teams went back-and-forth for much of the game. Covenant took a 23-22 lead on another Schroeder kill, but N.C. Wesleyan scored four of the final five points to win the set and keep the match going.

Covenant led 22-13 in the fourth set after a Schuyler Moore ace before N.C. Wesleyan mounted a comeback. The Bishops scored seven straight to cut the Lady Scots' lead to 22-20. After a Covenant timeout, the Lady Scots took advantage of two N.C. Wesleyan service errors to go ahead 24-21. The Bishops scored two straight, but Covenant would hang on after N.C. Wesleyan had an attack error to end the match.

Emily McLain had nine kills to lead N.C. Wesleyan (5-17, 4-9 USA South) who also got 18 assists and 12 digs from Kayla White.

Covenant will return home on Wednesday, Oct. 22 for its first home match of the month when they host USA South rival Piedmont. First serve is set for 6:30 p.m.
