Scots Defeated at Piedmont to Close Regular Season

DEMOREST, Ga. -- Will Skidmore's RBI fielder's choice in the bottom of the sixth inning gave host Piedmont a 4-3 lead and the Lions would hang on over the final three innings to take a 7-3 victory over Covenant on Tuesday night.

The Scots end the regular season with a 25-13 overall record. Covenant will participate in the NCCAA Mid-East Regional Tournament on May 9-11 in Nashville, Tenn.

Skidmore's RBI came after Covenant had rallied to tie the score at 3-3 in the top of the sixth. Scott Gillespie led off the inning with a triple and was driven in on a Sterling Witt single. Witt then advanced to second on a passed ball before Perry Rigby plated him with an RBI single. Covenant threatened to do more damage with runners at second and third and one out, but could not capitalize any further.

After Piedmont regained the lead in the sixth, the Lions added three more runs in the eighth to pull away. Skidmore and Kevin D'Antignac had run-scoring singles to highlight the frame.

The Scots had a brief 1-0 lead after the top of the fourth, when Chris Rollins doubles with two outs and was followed by a Paul Phillips RBI single. Piedmont would answer with a three-run fifth inning.

Covenant reliever Alec Mitchell (5-4) suffers the loss for the Scots as he allowed four runs, three earned, in three innings of work. Starter Alhanon Miller went five innings and gave up three runs, one earned, on four hits while striking out five.

Covenant recorded eight hits on the night with David Lockwood and Gillespie getting two apiece. It is Lockwood's 17th multi-hit game of the season and Gillespie's 14th.

Allen Tokarz (4-3) picks up the win in relief for the Lions who move to 20-21 on the year. Keith Grabowski led the Lions' 10-hit attack going 3-for-3 with a pair of runs scored. Skidmore, D'Antignac, and Austin Brick each had two RBIs.
