Scots Run Over Victory, Advance to Winner's Bracket

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Scott Gillespie had three hits and three RBIs and the Covenant baseball team stole eight bases as they routed Victory 10-3 in game one of the NCCAA Mid-East Region Tournament Wednesday afternoon in Nashville.

Covenant moves on to face top-seed Campbellsville tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. central time.

Starting pitcher Alhanon Miller (7-1) threw all seven innings and allowed just one earned run on three hits. Miller threw 118 pitches, 74 for strikes and struck out six while walking four. The right-hander settled down after allowing a run in each of the first three innings. At one point, Miller retired nine straight batters.

The offense came alive for the Scots in the second and third innings. Covenant scored three runs in the second and five more in the third.

K.C. Simons and Reid Pope started the second inning with consecutive hits. Will Cleland drove home Simons with a sacrifice fly one batter later. David Lockwood plated pinch runner Tyler Baker with a single and Gillespie doubled home Lockwood to cap the inning giving the Scots a 3-1 lead.

After Victory cut the Scots' lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the second, Covenant responded with five runs to pull away. Gillespie again had one of the biggest hits in the inning as he drove home two runs with a single to center field. Paul Phillips also contributed an RBI single as Covenant went ahead 8-2.

Miller made sure that those runs stood up as he mowed through the Victory lineup. Of the three hits Miller gave up, two were to opposing starting pitcher and No. 5 hitter Shaw Dickerson.

Of the Scots' 15 hits, Gillespie and Simons each had three. Perry Rigby and Sterling Witt added two hits apiece. Every starter recorded either a hit or scored a run.

Dickerson gets the loss for Victory as he allowed eight runs, seven earned, on 13 hits in 5.1 innings of work.
