Lockwood, Lane Power Scots Past Hiwassee

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant baseball team used two home runs from Braeden Lane and scored 16 runs on 17 hits as they outslugged Hiwassee 16-9 on Friday afternoon.

The two teams combined to score 25 runs, walk 14 batters, and collect 31 hits.

Hiwassee opened the scoring to take a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Covenant responded with scores in three straight innings. Scott Gillespie drove in two runners in the bottom of the first and Reid Pope scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the 2nd.

Lane built on the Scots' lead with a blast over the left field fence in the bottom of the third, his first of the day and first of the season.

The Tigers finally answered the Scots five-run streak with four of their own in the top of the fourth inning. Hiwassee third baseman Chris Large capped the big inning with a three-run triple down the right field line.

In the bottom of the fifth, a two-run double from Will Cleland and a two-run single from Gillespie gave the Scots a 9-7 lead. Pope added another run with an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth to score Chris Rollins.

Hiwassee continued to fight back with a ground out RBI in the top of the seventh bringing the score to 10-8.

The Scots broke the game open with a six-run scoring tear in the bottom of the eighth. Lane opened the scoring in that inning with his second homer of the day. Cleland notched his third RBI of the day by scoring Rollins and David Lockwood brought the Scots to 16 runs with a one-out grand slam homer, his first of the season.

Alhanon Miller moved to 4-0 on the season by pitching 2.1 innings yielding only one hit and two walks with one strikeout and no runs given up.

Logan Tant earned the loss for Hiwassee giving up four runs and three walks with two strikeouts.

Covenant will play a doubleheader at Hiwassee on Saturday in Madisonville with game times set for 12:00 and 2:00 p.m.
