SEWANEE, Tenn. -- For a second straight day at the Lon Varnell Classic, the Covenant Scots came away with a resounding win. On Saturday afternoon the Scots dominated Boyce College to win 82-60. With the victory, Covenant improves to 3-0 for the season.
It was Callum Sears again who led the way in scoring for the Scots with 23 points. In the two games Covenant played at the Lon Varnell Classic, Sears totaled 50 points while shooting 17-for-30 from the field. Sears connected on six 3-pointers on Saturday and went 7-for-13 from the field overall.
Jon DeVries also scored in double digits with 15 points while grabbing six rebounds. Newcomer Bryant Engbers came off the bench to provide 10 points and two steals. Colton McGriff and Joey Danek tied for the team lead with seven rebounds each.
The Scots took a commanding halftime lead of 46-30 with the help of seven 3-pointers while limiting Boyce to only 38.5 percent shooting from the floor (10-26). In the second half, Covenant cooled off from the floor, but continued to play aggressive defense that allowed Boyce to hit just eight shots in the half.
Matt Powell led Boyce in scoring with 23 points, and collected six rebounds. Trey Ethridge added 13 points for the Bulldogs.
The Scots outrebounded Boyce 50-40 with a 22-15 advantage in offensive rebounds. Covenant turned the Bulldogs over 20 times, while the Scots committed just 12 for the game.
Covenant will return to action on Nov. 22 when they travel to Memphis to take on Rhodes College. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
