MEMPHIS, Tenn -- After the first week of playing regular season games, the Covenant Scots went undefeated at 3-0. The second week included just one game and did not treat the Scots as kindly.
The Rhodes College Lynx used two major scoring runs, one in each half, to defeat Covenant 67-58 on Tuesday night in Memphis, Tennessee. The loss is the first of the year for the Scots as they drop to 3-1, while Rhodes improves to 2-1.
Covenant started off strong as they built a quick 5-0 lead and held Rhodes scoreless until a John Dunavant 3-pointer with 14:22 left in the first half. That trey started a 20-0 scoring run by the Lynx that lasted nearly seven minutes and gave Rhodes a commanding 20-5 lead. But the Scots fought back and cut the Lynx lead down to 26-23 at the break thanks to a 3-pointer from Callum Sears and a basket from Rosbie Mutcherson, both within the final minute of the half.
The Scots continued their comeback trail in the second half when Sears' 3-pointer at the 9:58 mark of the half tied the game at 41-41. After several minutes went by with Rhodes taking leads then Covenant coming back to tie the game, the Scots tied it for the final time on a jumper by Jon DeVries who then completed the conventional three-point play to tie the score at 58.
But the Lynx responded once more as Dunavant hit another 3-pointer and on Rhodes' next possession Geoff Livsey buried a trey of his own to put the home team up 64-58. Rhodes would then hit 3-for-4 from the free throw line to cap off a 9-0 run to end the game and secure the win.
Sears again led the Scots in scoring for the third time this season with 23 points on 8-for-16 shooting, including four 3-pointers. DeVries added eight points and five rebounds while Zarome Lakey chipped in with seven points. Covenant shot 45 percent from the floor (22-49) and six 3-pointers.
Rhodes put three players in double figures led by Livsey's 15 points. Dunavant poured in 13 points while Andrew Galow had 10 points and four assists.
Covenant will return to the hardwood on November 29 when they face the University of the South at Barnes Physical Education Center. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m.
