SEWANEE, Tenn. -- Callum Sears had 27 points to lead all scorers as the Covenant Scots got their second straight win to begin the season on Friday night with an 80-68 victory over Free Will Baptist College at the Lon Varnell Classic hosted by the University of the South.
Sears went 10-for-17 from the floor and knocked down three 3-pointers on the night in just 23 minutes of action. Damien Chaney was the only other Scot in double figures with his 10 points. Joey Danek, fresh off a 17 rebound performance on Tuesday night against Berry College, collected a game-high 13 rebounds to go along with six points.
Covenant built a 43-30 halftime edge on the strength of their shooting. The Scots shot 50 percent (17-34) overall in the first 20 minutes and 5-for-10 from behind the arc. Covenant held Free Will to just 39 percent (13-33) and outrebounded the Flames 22-17.
Though Covenant would cool off a bit in their shooting, Free Will could not take full advantage in the second half and the Scots held on for the win.
Free Will was led by Steven Terrell on the night as he came off the bench to score 15 points on 6-for-15 shooting. Kendred Sides added 12 points and six rebounds for the Flames.
Colton McGriff came off the bench for Covenant (2-0) to score eight points and grab five rebounds. T.J. Cox added seven points and Jon DeVries chipped in six more for Covenant.
The Scots will take on Boyce College, who lost to Sewanee 85-54, Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. to complete the Lon Varnell Classic.
