ROME, Ga. -- Covenant golf had a banner tournament on Monday and Tuesday, shooting a 54-hole program record 14-under, 850, winning the Chick-Fil-A Invitational by 18 shots to wrap up their fall season.
That 850 broke the previous program record, which was set earlier this fall at the West Pines Collegiate, by an astounding 23 shots, and in the process, the Scots upended three top-40 ranked programs: Pomona-Pitzer (No. 24), Berry (No. 27), and Randolph-Macon (No. 38).
Drew Silman also had his best tournament as a Covenant golfer, breaking his previous program record for a 54-hole tournament by eight shots, as he won the individual side with his 12-under, 204, including a program record-tying 67 in his first round. He carded 17 birdies, the most by any golfer at the event.
Freshman
Oliver Bean was next behind Silman, but had an excellent tournament of his own, tying for fourth in program history for a 54-hole tournament with his 2-under, 214, landing him fourth individually. Bean birdied eight holes, and led the field with 40 pars.
Next behind Bean were
Cole Godwin and
Calvin Johnson, who shot identical 6-over, 222s. Godwin led the tournament with two eagles, while adding eight birdies, and Johnson landed 10 birdies. They placed tied for 17th individually.
Rounding out the competitors for Covenant were
Coleman Fleury, who had a 13-over, 229, and
Thomas Milajecki, who competed as an individual with a 19-over, 235. Fleury had five birdies for his tournament, while Milajecki had three.
The Scots have concluded their fall slate on a major high note, as head coach
Eddie Jackson has put Covenant in prime position to compete well going into the spring season.
