Scots Open Indoor Season with Strong Showing at Birmingham Icebreaker

Covenant College Track & Field opened its indoor campaign this weekend at the Birmingham Indoor Icebreaker, delivering a series of encouraging early-season performances that highlighted both veteran leadership and emerging talent across the roster.

The meet began with solid results in the field events. In the men's long jump, Connor Moffat posted Covenant's top mark of the day with a jump of 5.85 meters, setting a strong baseline for the season ahead. The throws group also showed promise, as Max Davis threw 11.50 meters in the shot put and Codey Parrish recorded a 10.82-meter mark in the weight throw. On the women's side, long jumpers Elie Berndt and Josephine Swinburnson opened their seasons with jumps of 4.14 and 4.07 meters, respectively.

Momentum carried over to the track, where the Scots produced several standout races. Cameron Baine got the sprint group started with a personal best of 7.87 seconds in the 60-meter dash before returning to run 24.77 in the 200 meters. In the men's 3000 meters, Ethan Saiki turned in one of the top distance performances of the day, running a personal record of 8:56 to finish inside the top 12. Teammate John Purtill, competing in his final collegiate meet, closed out his career with a personal best of 9:27.

The men's mile featured a tightly grouped effort from the Scots. Chandler Lines led the trio with a time of 4:39, followed closely by Jack Dupree in 4:45 and Trey Mortensen in 4:46. The women's mile group similarly showcased depth and competitiveness as Sarah Olson led Covenant with a time of 5:32, while Lucie Demers (5:35), Kenzi Stapleton (5:36), and Aida Okie (5:54) each delivered strong season-opening performances.

In the women's sprints, Sophia Velleco put together a busy afternoon, running 1:04.44 in the 400 meters before returning to clock 28.64 in the 200 meters. She was joined in the 200 by Josephine Swinburnson (29.50) and Jaiden Henderson (31.19), who closed out the meet for the Scots.

Overall, the Birmingham Indoor Icebreaker provided a promising start to Covenant's indoor season, with multiple personal bests and balanced contributions across event groups. The Scots will look to build on this early momentum as they continue preparations for the heart of the indoor schedule as they look to compete on January 18th at the Samford Indoor Open.
