Scots Falter in Series Finale at Maryville

MARYVILLE, Tenn. -- Playing a "home" game on the road, the Covenant baseball team fell in game three of its series with Maryville 9-1 on Monday night. The contest was a makeup from last Friday's postponed game on Lookout Mountain. Even though the game was played at Maryville, Covenant was the home team as it was scheduled to be on Friday.

The loss drops Covenant to 7-13 on the year and 4-8 in the USA South. Maryville goes to 18-7 overall and 14-7 in league play.

Maryville scored single runs in the second and third innings off Covenant starting pitcher Jonah Paul. Maryville then added a pair of runs in the fifth on a two-run single from Zack Blonder and five more in the sixth with the Nick Dean's three-run homer the highlight of the frame.

Covenant scratched across a run in its half of the sixth. KC Simons led off with a double down the line in right field and, after stealing third, later scored on a Scott Gillespie RBI groundout to cut the margin to 9-1.

Paul (1-3) lasted 4.2 innings allowing four earned runs on six hits with three strikeouts. Ben Copeland made his collegiate debut in the seventh and tossed two scoreless innings giving up just one hit and striking out three.

Will Cleland had two of Covenant's six hits as he went 2-for-4. Simons, Caleb Bloye, Perry Rigby and Alex Kerr all had a hit apiece.

Maryville starter Lawson Wishard (3-3) gets the win after going seven innings and surrendering one run on six hits with six punch outs. Dean went 3-for-4 with a homer and four RBIs on the night while Logan Jenkins added two hits. Dean produced 11 RBIs in the three-game series.

Covenant will be back in USA South action this weekend with a three-game series at North Carolina Wesleyan in Rocky Mount, N.C. The teams will play a doubleheader on Friday starting at 1 p.m.
