Perfect Weekend: Lady Scots Cruise to 4-0 Start

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Covenant volleyball team earned two more victories on Saturday at the MckAttack Classic in Birmingham, Alabama, and in the process moved to 4-0 on the year after winning all four matches this weekend.

Covenant defeated Mount St. Joseph 3-0 (25-23, 25-15, 31-29) in the day's first match before knocking off Sewanee 3-0 (25-13, 25-12, 25-19) to conclude the tournament. The Lady Scots are off to a 4-0 start to the season for the first time in recent program history, dating back to 1985.

After getting through Mount St. Joseph in the morning, Covenant met with regional foe Sewanee in the afternoon match. The Lady Scots dominated the first two sets before Sewanee challenged in the third set, ultimately to no avail.

Ginny Moore had a match-high 10 kills to go along with 17 digs in the day's second match, while twin sister Schuyler Moore tallied 19 assists, 12 digs and nine kills. Chloe Carlson registered a match-high 19 digs. Stephanie Kirkpatrick had 14 assists and Chelsea VanDyk and Cora Schroeder had seven and five kills, respectively.

As a team, Covenant had 26 kills and a hitting percentage of .258.

In the first set, Covenant held a slim 9-7 lead before rattling off seven unanswered points, capped by a Schuyler Moore kill, to go ahead 16-7. The Lady Scots cruised from that point forward in the set to win it 25-13. The second set saw Covenant jump out to a huge lead at 13-2 and later at 21-8 as the Lady Scots took a two set edge.

After leading 18-12 in the third set, Covenant had its lead cut to just two points at 19-17. But an attack error by Sewanee followed by a kill from Schroeder extended the lead back to four at 21-17 and Covenant would go on to secure the victory.

Statistics from the first match of the day against Mount St. Joseph were not available at the conclusion of the match.

VanDyk and Carlson were each named to the All-Tournament team.

Covenant returns home on Wednesday, Sept. 3 to face non-conference foe Wesleyan. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
