MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- The Covenant volleyball team clinched the No. 2 seed in the USA South's South Division with two victories on Saturday. Covenant swept both LaGrange and Huntingdon on Saturday in its final conference regular season matches of the year.
The Lady Scots will have the No. 2 seed from the South in next weekend's conference tournament in Martinsville, Va. Time and opponent for their first round matchup is still to be determined. Covenant improves to 24-9 overall and 12-4 in league play.
In a 3-0 win over LaGrange to start the day, the Lady Scots won by set scores of 25-17, 25-17, 25-13.
Ginny Moore had 11 kills and 14 digs, while Chloe Carlson had 23 digs. Schuyler Moore tallied nine kills, 14 assists and five digs. Stephanie Kirkpatrick had a team-high 18 assists to go with four digs. Cora Schroeder also added eight kills in the victory.
The Lady Scots accumulated 39 kills and a hitting percentage of .236 in the match. Covenant registered 18 kills, with a hitting percentage of .342, in the opening set as they led for nearly the entire game to pick up a 1-0 match lead.
Covenant had fewer kills in the second set, but still managed to win 25-17 to go ahead 2-0. In the third set, Covenant broke open a close score early in the game to go ahead 13-5 and would never look back in taking the three-set victory.
Katie Chancellor led LaGrange (16-17, 6-9 USA South) with 11 kills in the loss.
In the day's second match, Covenant held off a pesky Huntingdon team in three sets. The Lady Scots took the win with set scores of 25-19, 26-24, 25-22.
Again it was Ginny Moore leading the attack for Covenant with 13 kills to go along with seven digs and a pair of service aces. Schuyler Moore had eight kills, 16 assists and five digs, Carlson led the team with 22 digs and Kirkpatrick recorded 11 assists. Jessica Seehorn had two aces and six kills.
The Lady Scots tallied 14 kills in the opening set, but had to pull away from the host Hawks to gain the set victory. Leading 15-12 in the set, Covenant went on a 7-3 scoring run to take a 22-15 lead. After Huntingdon cut the margin to four at 22-18, Covenant got kills from Kirkpatrick and Schuyler Moore before a Huntingdon error ended the set.
The teams went extra points in the second set as Huntingdon rallied from a 19-17 deficit to take a 24-23 lead. Consecutive kills from Seehorn, Ginny Moore and Schuyler Moore completed the Covenant rally as they grabbed a 2-0 match lead.
In the third set, the score was tied at 21 apiece before Covenant scored four of the final five points. Seehorn had a kill during that stretch while Huntingdon committed three errors.
Rachel Dunlay had seven kills to pace Huntingdon (7-26, 0-16 USA South). Lexi Rangel notched 15 digs and nine assists.
Covenant will play its final home match of the season on Tuesday, Nov. 4 against SAA foe Oglethorpe. The match begins at 6:30 p.m. Senior Night activities will take place before the contest as the team will honor Pretoria den Boer and Stephanie Kirkpatrick.
