LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- On homecoming night, the Covenant women's soccer team came up with a resounding 5-0 victory over visiting USA South foe LaGrange on a chilly Saturday evening.
The shutout was the fourth of the season for Covenant (6-6-1, 4-2 USA South). The Panthers (5-7, 2-4 USA South) were no match for the Lady Scots, who built up a 23-1 shot advantage, making goalkeeper Lucy Johnson's job easy one game after she made 13 saves against Maryville.
The first half ended with Covenant leading 2-0 on the strength of goals by Bethany Logan and Anne Charlotte Strawbridge. Rachel Bernard assisted on Logan's goal, while Strawbridge's unassisted score was her first goal of the season.
After the intermission, the Lady Scots struck quickly when Logan scored her second goal of the match, and fifth on season, in the 48th minute. She was again assisted by Bernard.
The scored stayed 3-0 until the 71st minute, when Covenant scored two goals in the span of 42 seconds. The first was by Andrea Hunt, when she struck one over the reach of LaGrange keeper Courtney Slauson and into the net from about 25 yards away. Ruth Terry rounded out the scoring with her goal in the 72nd minute. For Terry, it was her first goal of the season.
The win moves Covenant into third place in the USA South standings. Next up, the Lady Scots travel to Atlanta to play non-conference foe, and nationally-ranked, Emory on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
