LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant baseball team continued its torrid start to the season on Friday afternoon as the Scots blasted four home runs and got a school record-tying six RBIs from Scott Gillespie to claim a 15-3 victory over Tennessee Temple.

With the win, Covenant moves to 21-5 on the season and have now won 14 of its last 16 contests. Temple drops to 15-13 overall.

Gillespie's six runs batted in ties a school record and tops his previous high mark of five coming last season against Huntingdon. Gillespie finished the day 3-for-3 with a home run, double, and single.

The last time a Covenant player had six RBIs in a game was back on March 5, 2010 when Luke Furuto accomplished the feat in a 10-3 win over Temple. Furuto and Gillespie are the only two Scots to ever record six RBIs in a game.

But Gillespie was not alone in the power category on this day.

Perry Rigby belted a grand slam home run into the trees in left field in the second inning. For a moment, Rigby had the team lead in home runs but his round-tripper was followed by a Braeden Lane blast to right-center field for back-to-back home runs. Lane and Rigby each have four homers on the season.

Andrew Beck capped the scoring in the sixth inning when he homered to left-center field for his first career home run. Beck tallied two hits and two RBIs on the day.

Covenant starter Micah Mabe was again impressive on the mound. Mabe (6-1) went six innings allowing just two hits and two unearned runs while striking out eight as he picked up his sixth win of the season.

Left-handed relief pitcher Dan Thomas came on for the final inning and struck out two.

Covenant scored three runs in the first on the strength of Gillespie's two-run double to left field. The Scots then exploded for six more runs in the second thanks to Rigby and Lane home runs. Gillespie launched a three-run homer in the third to give Covenant a commanding 12-0 lead. The Scots scored single runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings.

The large lead allowed head coach Doug Simons to empty his bench as 11 different reserves came into the game.

Will Cleland and David Lockwood each was 2-for-3 with two runs scored. K.C. Simons had a hit and two runs scored.

Covenant will travel to face the NCCAA Division II's No. 1 ranked Toccoa Falls on Saturday. Game one of the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m.
