Baseball Scots Split with Toccoa Falls

TOCCOA FALLS, Ga. -- The Covenant baseball team split a doubleheader with NCCAA Division II's No. 1 ranked Toccoa Falls on Saturday afternoon. Toccoa Falls took game one 6-3, while the Scots rallied with four runs in the fifth inning of game two to erase a 1-0 deficit as they claimed a 4-2 win.

The loss in the first game snapped Covenant's perfect road record. The Scots move to 22-6 on the season and are 10-1 in games away from Lookout Mountain.

Game One: Toccoa Falls 6, Covenant 3

Despite homers from Perry Rigby and Braeden Lane, it was a five-run third inning from Toccoa Falls that gave the hosts a lead they would not relinquish as they took game one 6-3.

Covenant got on the board first in the second inning thanks to long balls from Rigby and Lane. Much like Friday against Tennessee Temple, the duo again hit back-to-back home runs, both solo shots, to give the Scots a 2-0 lead. Rigby and Lane are still tied for the team lead with five home runs apiece.

David Murphy then singled home Chris Rollins, who had doubled, to make it 3-0 after an inning and a half.

Toccoa Falls would answer with a run in its half of the second before taking the lead for good with five in the third. The Eagles took advantage of two Covenant errors and got a two-run home run from Zack Warner and a two-run double by AJ Mussler as they took a 6-3 lead.

Those six runs would be enough for Toccoa Falls starter Dylan Charles. Charles picks up the win as he went six innings allowing three earned runs on seven hits, while striking out three. Jacob Martin pitched a scoreless seventh to notch the save.

Covenant starter Garrett Kriston (3-1) gets his first loss of the season. Kriston gave up nine hits and six runs, but just two of those runs were earned.

Rollins was 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored for Covenant. Josh Ward and Adam Reynolds both had two hits for the Eagles.

Game Two: Covenant 4, Toccoa Falls 2

In the second game, starter Keith Rice surrendered just two runs over five innings and the Scots scored all four runs in the fifth inning to claim a doubleheader split with a 4-2 victory.

Rice (1-3), who had struggled recently, found some success in his outing. The right-hander scattered five hits over six innings of work and gave up two runs and pucnhed out three as he was credited with his first win of the season.

Sterling Witt came on in relief in the seventh inning and threw a scoreless frame to get his second save of the season.

Justin Key gave Toccoa Falls a 1-0 lead with a home run in the bottom of the fourth inning. But Covenant would respond in a big way in the top of the fifth.

Rigby led the inning off with a single that was followed by Lane getting drilled by a pitch. Witt then doubled home Rigby to tie the score and chase Toccoa Falls starter Zach Breeden. K.C. Simons walked to load the bases and Paul Phillips reached on a fielder's choice as Lane scored thanks to an error by the Eagles catcher to give the Scots a 2-1 lead.

With two outs, Will Cleland brought home Witt with an RBI fielder's choice and Simons then scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-1. In all, Covenant sent eight men to the plate and scored four runs on just two base hits.

Toccoa Falls would scratch across a run in the bottom of the fifth on a Ronnie Stewart RBI double, but the Covenant pitching staff held down the Eagles the rest of the way.

Rigby had two of Covenant's four hits in the game. Witt and Phillips each had a hit also. Stewart was 2-for-4 with an RBI for Toccoa Falls.

Breeden lasted four-plus innings for the Eagles allowing three runs, one earned, on two hits as he is saddled with the loss.

Covenant is back on the field on Tuesday afternoon when they host 20th-ranked Birmingham-Southern. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
