EMORY, Va. -- Callum Sears scored 18 points off the bench, on the strength of four 3-pointers, to lead the Covenant men's basketball team to a 62-58 road win over Emory & Henry on Monday night.
With the victory, Covenant moves to 12-8 on the season. Emory & Henry falls to 4-16 overall. The win also completes a season sweep of the Wasps for Covenant as the Scots also claimed a 66-60 win over Emory & Henry back in November.
Sears was joined in double figures by Colton McGriff and Sam Bowman who had 13 and 11 points apiece. Bowman just missed a double-double with eight rebounds, while McGriff was a perfect 6-of-6 from the free-throw line. Jon DeVries chipped in eight points and four rebounds before fouling out. Rosbie Mutcherson had a team-high three assists in the absence of injured point guard T.J. Cox.
Emory & Henry was led by Armando Murrell's 13 points. Myles Turner registered a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds and Charles Smith added 10 points for the Wasps.
Covenant gained a double digit lead in the first half, thanks in large part to Sears' 11 points in the opening period. The Scots took their largest lead of the game at 37-24 after a pair of free-throws from Bowman. Turner converted a layup just before the halftime buzzer to shrink Covenant's lead to 37-26 going into the break.
The second half saw Emory & Henry climb back into the contest as the Wasps cut the Scots' lead to just three points after a Smith layup made it 53-50 in favor of Covenant with 4:48 left. Bowman came through for Covenant with a steal followed by a conventional three-point play to give the Scots a 56-50 lead with 3:48 to go.
Covenant would then hold off the Wasps with just enough made free-throws down the stretch to secure the win. The Scots made 4-of-6 from the charity stripe within the final minute of regulation.
The Scots made just 38.8 percent (19-49) from the floor, but drained seven 3-pointers and 17-of-24 free-throws on the night. Emory & Henry connected on 23-of-55 (41.8 percent) and was only 8-of-19 from the foul line.
Covenant will have a short layover as they return to play on Wednesday on the road against LaGrange. Tip-off is slated for 8 p.m. LaGrange defeated Covenant 69-55 on Nov. 28.
