LAGRANGE, Ga. -- Three Covenant players scored in double figures led by Colton McGriff's 13 points, but the Scots could not overcome host LaGrange on Wednesday night as the Panthers claimed a 58-54 win.
Covenant drops to 12-9 on the season and the loss snaps a brief two-game road winning streak. LaGrange completes the season sweep of the Scots and moves to 9-10 overall.
Trailing 50-43 with 6:47 remaining in the game, Covenant went on a 9-0 scoring run over the next four minutes that was capped by a pair of McGriff free-throws that gave the Scots a 52-50 lead.
The complexion of the game changed on LaGrange's next possession. The Panthers' Dustin Baxter drilled a 3-pointer from the top of the circle and Covenant's Jake Delaney was whistled for a foul away from the ball. The Scots' foul allowed LaGrange's Mark Wagner to shoot bonus free-throws and he connected on both ending a five-point possession for LaGrange to give the home team a 55-52 lead.
Still, Covenant had a chance as Sam Bowman made a layup with 29 seconds remaining to cut the LaGrange lead to 55-54. LaGrange's Kyron Anderson then missed the front end of a one-and-one free-throw and Nate Frierson tracked down the rebound for Covenant. Unfortunately for the Scots, Frierson got trapped in the corner and Covenant tried to call timeout, of which the Scots had none left resulting in a technical foul.
Wagner would make the first technical free-throw and miss the second, but a Covenant turnover on its next possession resulted in two more made free-throws by LaGrange as the Panthers secured the win.
Bowman recorded a double-double for Covenant with 12 points and 11 rebounds, while Joey Danek added 12 points in a reserve role. Frierson dished out a team-high four assists. The Scots shot 40.4 percent (23-57) from the field and outrebounded LaGrange 44-37.
LaGrange was led by Wagner's 16 points with Baxter chipping in 10 of his own. Marcus Vaughn grabbed seven rebounds and contributed three assists for the Panthers, who turned the ball over 20 times but made 19 free-throws.
LaGrange jumped out to a 10-point lead in the first half with 5:03 left, but Covenant was able to shrink its deficit to just four points at 27-23 by halftime.
Covenant will have a week off before playing Birmingham Southern on Wednesday, Feb. 13 in Birmingham, Ala. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m.
