Rigby, Miller Propel Scots to 10-4 Win

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Freshman Perry Rigby went 4-for-4 with four runs batted in, while fellow freshman Alhanon Miller went six strong innings on the mound to lead the Covenant baseball team to a 10-4 win over Sewanee on Tuesday afternoon.

Covenant wins its fifth straight contest to move to 7-1 on the season. Sewanee drops to 4-2 overall.

Miller (2-0) was outstanding in his start. The freshman surrendered just four hits and one earned run, while striking out three in six innings of work. Spencer Smith came on in relief and threw the final three innings to notch his first save of the season.

Rigby had three doubles and a walk on the day. Two of his doubles plated two runs in both the sixth and seventh innings to help the Scots pull away from Sewanee.

Will Cleland and Scott Gillespie each had two hits. Cleland reached base in all five plate appearances and scored two runs. K.C. Simons and David Lockwood both added a hit apiece.

After Sewanee had taken a 2-1 lead in the top of the second inning, the Scots responded with three runs in their half of the second. Rigby scored on a fielder's choice, Simons drove home Braeden Lane with a single and then Reid Pope touched home on a wild pitch to give the Scots a 4-2 lead.

The score remained 4-2 until the fifth when Covenant added one more on a Lane RBI groundout that plated Patrick Sanderson. In the sixth and seventh innings, the Scots added five insurance runs to take a 10-2 lead. Rigby's two-run doubles in both innings highlighted the scoring.

Brett Polston (0-1) gets the loss for Sewanee. Polston lasted just 1.2 innings allowing four runs and walking six. The Tigers used four different pitchers out of the bullpen.

Sewanee got two hits each from Jack Whaley, Jack Rogers, and Blake Williams. Rogers contributed two runs batted in.

Covenant returns to play on Friday when they host Brescia University in a nine-inning game starting at 2 p.m. The two teams then play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 12 p.m.
