LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Playing in her debut at Scotland Yard, freshman Ruth Terry made quite an entrance. Terry scored two goals in the second period to help lead Covenant past Agnes Scott 4-1 in GSAC action on Wednesday night.
Covenant got on the board first in the 38th minute of play when Mary Claire Roberson, another freshman, gave a beautiful pass to Bethany Logan who found the back of the net to put the Lady Scots up 1-0. Covenant added to its lead in the 61st minute as Amy Dykstra played the ball into the net after Agnes Scott keeper Ashley Watts misplayed a cross.
The visiting Scotties (1-2, 0-1 GSAC) made it a 2-1 match in the 77th minute when Hallie Bates dribbled the ball towards the corner then laced a shot just over the outstretched arms of Lady Scots keeper Hannah Bales for the score.
Terry's goals would be huge for Covenant as they thwarted a potential Agnes Scott comeback. The freshman's first goal came off a nice touch pass from Katelyn Newsome into the box that Terry placed perfectly past Watts for the score. Less than four minutes later, Terry was the beneficiary of a rebound off an Agnes Scott defender and quickly took a shot that got past Watts from the top of the box to make it 4-1.
Covenant (1-1-1, 1-0 GSAC) outshot the Scotties 18-7, with an 11-5 advantage in shots on goal. Bales made three saves on the night, while Watts recorded seven for Agnes Scott.
The Lady Scots will take on the NAIA's University of Pikeville on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. at Scotland Yard. The match follows the JV women's soccer match against Pikeville slated for 5:00 p.m.
