LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Katelyn Newsome came up big when her team needed it the most. Newsome's goal in the 80th minute of play gave Covenant a 1-0 advantage and the Lady Scots would hold on as they defeated University of Pikeville on Saturday night at Scotland Yard.

Covenant (2-1-1) outshot the visiting Bears 18-5, but could not get any of those other 17 shots to find the net until Newsome's chance. In the 80th minute, Bethany Logan had an opportunity to score, but Pikeville keeper Chelsea Schulte was there to deflect the ball away. Newsome trailed the play perfectly and was there to put the rebound into the net from just a few yards out.

The Lady Scots took seven shots on goal for the match as they held possession of the ball for the majority of the time. Ruth Terry had two looks at the net, but Schulte was there each time for the save. Newsome also had two shots on goal. Jenna Vreeland and Rachel Bernard also had a shot on goal each. Schulte finished with six saves on the night.

Keeper Hannah Bales made four saves herself for the Lady Scots. One of Pikeville's best chances to score came in the 71st minute, but Bales was there to save Erin Randle's shot and keep the match scoreless.

Eleanor Hollingsworth, Carmen Koster, and Kara Henning also had one shot on goal apiece for the Bears (2-1) who suffered their first defeat of the year.

Covenant continues its long homestand with a match against Sewanee on Wednesday, September 12 at 7:00 p.m. at Scotland Yard.
