SEWANEE, Tenn. --- The Covenant Scots baseball team traveled to Sewanee, Tenn., for a single game against the University of the South Tigers. The Scots came out on top of the Tigers 13-4.
James Rollins went 3-for-5 with three runs, two of which were home runs, and three RBIs. James' brother Chris Rollins went 2-for-5 along with two runs, including a home run, and two RBIs.
The Scots reached home plate first in the first inning. David Lockwood was first to step up to the plate and managed to reach on a throwing error and advanced to second base. James Rollins followed with a two-run home run that scored Lockwood and put Covenant up 2-0.
After back-to-back singles, Ben Chambers gained an RBI with a single and went on to score on a throwing error. The Scots ended the first inning with a lead of 5-0, a lead the Tigers could not catch up to.
The Tigers managed to make a single run the same inning when Alan Komorowski led off with a single and scored on a double by Wilson Nealy to make it 5-1. But Scots starter Keith Rice limited the Tigers to just two runs over five innings.
Covenant continued to score two runs in the third, three more in the sixth, two in the seventh, and a single run in the ninth. Chris Rollins followed his brother's home run with one of his own in the sixth inning that batted in two runs. James Rollins hit his second home run of the game in the ninth inning for the final run of the Scots and the game.
Rice (2-0) was given the win for the Scots as he pitched five innings allowing only a single earned run on six hits, while striking out four. Sewanee starter Marshall Ussery (2-2) was saddled with the loss for the Tigers after allowing five runs, one earned, in less than an inning. The Covenant bullpen of Brooks Hale, Jacob Hutcherson, and Alec Mitchell combined to give up two runs over four innings.
Lockwood ended with a 2-for-4 day and added two runs and two RBIs. Kurt Wiles went 2-for-2 with a single run and RBI. Scott Gillespie and Jonathan Carter added single runs each, while Chambers scored two runs of his own.
The Scots return home on Thursday, April 5 at 4 p.m. against the Maryville College Scots. This will be game one of a three-game series.
