LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Led by three RBIs each from Mikee Moore, Nick Dean, and Andrew Mabini, the Maryville Scots defeated Covenant 10-5 in game one of a three-game GSAC baseball series on Thursday afternoon.
Covenant falls to 13-12 overall and 4-6 in conference play with the loss. Maryville improves to 12-14 and 1-3 in GSAC play.
Covenant ace starting pitcher Tyler Smith was roughed up for eight earned runs over 5.2 innings of work. Smith had only allowed seven earned runs in 36.2 innings coming into the game, but Maryville took full advantage of him being off his game.
Maryville struck for two runs in the top of the first when Moore hit a one-out, two-run home run to left-center field to put the visitors up 2-0. Maryville added a single run in the third inning, thanks to a Mabini run-scoring single, before scoring three times in the fourth. Dean had the biggest hit of the fourth inning as his two-out double to center field scored two runs to make it 6-0.
Trailing 8-0 into the bottom of the sixth inning, Covenant put three runs across on Maryville starter Matt Dyer. James Rollins doubled down the left field line to leadoff the inning and two batters later Scott Gillespie was hit by a pitch to put runners at first and third. Chris Rollins then drove both runners home with a double to make it 8-2. Ben Chambers' double to left-center field plated Chris Rollins that cut the Covenant deficit to 8-3.
Maryville scored twice more in the eighth to seal the win. Covenant got a pinch-hit solo homer from Paul Phillips, his second of the year, and a Jonathan Carter RBI double in the bottom of the eighth that made it 10-5.
Smith (3-2) gets the loss after a rare rough outing. Spencer Smith came on in relief of Smith and threw the final 3.2 innings and allowed two runs on six hits. Dyer (2-1) receives the win for Maryville after going seven innings giving up three earned runs on six hits.
James Rollins went 3-for-4 with a run for Covenant and in the process extended his hitting streak to 13 games. Chris Rollins finished 1-for-4 with a pair of runs and RBIs.
Mabini and Dean each went 4-for-5 with three RBIs, while Cory Kopec added three hits in five at-bats and Blake Gentry two hits and two runs for Maryville.
Game two of the series will be played on Friday afternoon starting at 2 p.m. The third and final game of the series is set for Saturday at 1 p.m.
