Scots Finish Season with Split at Point

COLLEGE PARK, Ga. -- The Covenant Scots finished off the regular season against the Point University Skyhawks on Saturday afternoon. The two teams split the games with Point taking game one 2-1, before Covenant secured a split with a 14-0 win in game two.

The Scots wrap-up the regular season with a record of 22-18, while Point moves to 26-29 for the season. Covenant will now await word on its first opponent in the 2012 NCCAA Mid-East Regional Baseball Tournament on May 8-11 hosted by Mid-Continent (Ky.) University.

Game One

A low-scoring affair went the way of the hosts as Point pulled out a 2-1 win. After three-and-a-half innings, the Skyhawks scored a single run off a single by Tommy Braddock that plated Trey McKinney in the fourth inning. The Skyhawks continued in fifth to score another run to make it 2-0.

In the sixth inning, James Rollins stepped up to the plate and nailed a single into left field to score David Lockwood for Covenant's only run of the game.

Point starting pitcher KC Lorow (7-6) was given the win after 6.2 innings pitched and only one earned run. Relief pitcher Travis Tarleton was given his ninth save of the season for the Skyhawks. Covenant pitcher Tyler Smith (4-3) was saddled with the loss after pitching the entire game and allowing the two runs, one earned. Smith struck out two and scattered five hits for another strong outing.

Lockwood ended 1-for-2 with the only run of the game. Rollins had the only RBI for the Scots.

Game Two

After the loss in game one, the Scots pulled out a complete shutout for their final game of the season with a resounding 14-0 win.

The Scots began the scoring with a two-run home run by Scott Gillespie, the first of his Covenant career, that brought Lockwood to home and gave Covenant a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Covenant would then score three runs each of the next four innings to come away with the five-inning victory.

K.C. Simons doubled home two in the second inning and then singled home a pair in the third inning. In the fourth inning, Ben Chambers, Reid Pope, and Tyler Baker all joined the RBI parade. James Rollins stepped up to the plate in the fifth inning and nailed a three-run home run, his fifth of the year, to make it 14-0.

Covenant starting pitcher Andre Glover (2-4) was awarded the win for the game. Glover pitched all five innings and allowed only two hits along with a strikeout, while facing just one batter over the minimum. Skyhawks pitcher Tommy Braddock (4-7) was credited with the loss after two pitched innings and allowing five earned runs.

Both Lockwood and Chris Rollins finished 2-for-2 with two runs and RBIs. James Rollins went 1-for-4 with a run and three RBIs. K.C. Simons went 3-for-3 with two runs and four RBIs, while Ben Chambers went 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Gillespie ended 3-for-4 with two runs and RBIs. Will Cleland finished 2-for-2 with a single run.
