LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- With a hot unforgiving sun, the Covenant Scots and the LaGrange Panthers took to the diamond again for games two and three of the three-game series. Covenant already took the first game the day before, but split the doubleheader against LaGrange on Saturday. LaGrange took game two 10-3 while the Scots came back and won game three 9-5.
With the doubleheader split, Covenant takes two-out-of-three against the Panthers to improve their record to 12-11 overall and 4-5 in conference. LaGrange falls to 12-18 overall and 4-2 in GSAC action.
Game One
After a scoreless first inning, the Panthers struck first in the top of the second with five runs. Back-to-back singles produced a run scored by Jon Brock to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead. With runners on third and first, Miles Lee stepped up to the plate and tripled to plate two runs. Anthony Iannetta hit a single to bring Lee home and a sacrifice fly by Evin Eichelberger made the score 5-0.
The Panthers continued to score a single run in the third inning when Brent Kinsey homered to left field. The Scots managed to score a run in the bottom of the same inning on a home run by James Rollins that just cleared the left field fence. The homer for Rollins was his first of the season.
The Scots tried to climb back into the game in the sixth as Sterling Witt connected on his fourth homer of the year, a solo shot to right field, but the deficit was too great.
Panthers starting pitcher Doug Scherer (4-3) was credited with the win after eight innings and allowing three runs and eight hits on 130 pitches. Scots starter Andre Glover (1-3) gets the loss after going just 2.2 innings and giving up five earned runs.
Ben Chambers went 2-for-3 and added an RBI for the Scots, while both Witt and Rollins added a home run as well an RBI each.
Game Two
While the Scots came off a loss, they pulled it together in the second game to beat the Panthers 9-5 and take the series.
The Scots struck first this time with James Rollins scoring on a passed ball in the bottom of the first. Covenant continued to score in the bottom of the second with a three-run home run by David Lockwood that scored both K.C. Simons and Kurt Wiles to make it 4-0.
The Panthers were able to put a run up on the scoreboard in the top of the third by Lee. After a single up the middle and reaching third on a double by Iannetta, Lee scored on a sacrifice fly by Eichelberger.
The Scots added a single run in the fifth inning and four more in the sixth to pull away from the Panthers. Scott Gillespie had an RBI fielder's choice in the fifth, while Lockwood and James Rollins each had run-scoring singles in the sixth.
Eddie Jamerson (3-0) of the Scots was awarded the win with six innings and two runs allowed on 74 pitches. LaGrange starter Robbie Williams (2-3) was given the loss after throwing seven innings.
James Rollins went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs for the game. Wiles and Simons each scored two runs while Chambers added a run of his own. David Lockwood ended up 2-for-5 with two runs and four RBIs.
The Scots go on the road to Sewanee, Tenn., to play against the University of the South on Tuesday, April 3 for a single, nine-inning game.
