Baseball Falls in Conference Opener

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- The Covenant Scots baseball team travels to Alabama this weekend to face off against the Huntingdon College Hawks for a three game series. Huntingdon took game one on Friday night by a score of 7-2

The Scots will play games two and three against the Hawks on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.

Covenant is 7-7 on the season and 0-1 in the Great South Athletic Conference. Huntingdon goes to 16-4 overall and 1-0 in conference play.

The first couple of innings remained scoreless until the bottom of the third when Huntingdon scored four runs. The scoring began with a double by Joseph Odom that plated Seth Currie. Odom then scored on a Covenant throwing error to make it 2-0. After three consecutive singles, two more runs were put up on the scoreboard to make it 4-0 for the Hawks.

The Hawks continued to score in the fourth inning with a double by Jordan Freeman that batted in runners Trey Smith and Grant Brown to make it 6-0. The Hawks also scored off a triple by Smith in the sixth inning.

Covenant got on the board with a run in the top of the fifth when Kurt Wiles crossed the plate on a double play before the final out was made at second base. The Scots added a run in the eighth inning when Scott Gillespie batted in Chris Rollins.

Huntingdon starting pitcher John Rice (2-2) was awarded the win after throwing seven innings. Rice struck out five and allowed just one run on 74 pitches. Andre Glover (1-1) was given the loss for the Scots. Glover gave up seven runs, only four were earned, and struck out one. Ben Chambers pitched two scoreless innings for Covenant.

Gillespie went 2-for-4 and James Rollins ended up 2-for-3. Wiles added a hit in three at-bats with a run scored. Chris Rollins saw his six-game hitting streak snapped, but did score a run.
