Four First Half Goals Give Lady Scots Victory

DECATUR, Ga. -- Four first half goals by the Covenant Lady Scots were more than enough on this night as Covenant breezed past GSAC rival Spelman College by a final score of 5-1 on Wednesday evening in Decatur.

Covenant (13-4-1, 8-1 GSAC) scored all four goals in the final 23 minutes of the first half. Hannah Weichbrodt got the scoring going in the 22nd minute when she found the back of the net off an assist from Bethany Logan to make it 1-0 Lady Scots. The goal was Weichbrodt's second of the season.

In the 28th minute, it was Kara Lee's turn. Lee managed to score an unassisted goal, her second of the year, to give Covenant a 2-0 edge. Less than a minute later, Katelyn Newsome tallied her team-leading eighth goal of the year to make it 3-0. Logan was again credited with an assist on the play.

Amy Dykstra got in on the fun in the 31st minute when she scored her second goal of the year to cap the first half scoring for the Lady Scots and give them a 4-0 advantage.

Spelman (5-10, 2-7 GSAC) would get a score before the halftime break when Courtney Williams got the ball into the net, assisted by Monica Johnson, to cut the Covenant lead to 4-1.

Mo Cross scored the lone goal in the second half for Covenant in the 89th minute when she got her shot past Spelman keeper Kenya McQueen for the score, with an assist from Anne Charlotte Strawbridge.

Covenant outshot Spelman 20-4 and 14-2 in shots on target. Lucy Johnson and Hannah Bales split time in front of the net for Covenant and combined to record one save.

The Lady Scots return to the pitch on Saturday when they take on Agnes Scott College at 1:00 p.m. in Decatur, Ga.
