Covenant Loses Battle Of The Scots

MARYVILLE, Tenn -- Perennial Great South Athletic Conference power Maryville College took care of business on their home court against the visiting Covenant Scots as they posted an 89-64 win Wednesday night. It was the first GSAC game for both teams as Covenant drops to 4-11 for the year, while the host Scots improve to 10-6.

Covenant was led in scoring by freshman Colton McGriff who recorded his first career double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds. McGriff set a collegiate career-high in both categories, while going a perfect 8-for-8 from the free-throw line. Callum Sears added 10 points and seven rebounds. Zarome Lakey scored 10 points and grabbed six boards in a reserve role.

A McGriff 3-pointer at the 13:30 mark of the first half gave Covenant their largest lead of the game at 16-5. Lakey and Jon DeVries -- who was seeing his first action since being injured -- each had two baskets during the run to start the game. The lead for Covenant would not last long, however, as Maryville ripped off a 23-2 scoring run to take a 10-point lead at 28-18 with just under seven minutes remaining in the first half.

After trailing 44-29 at halftime, Covenant made a push to get back into the game in the second half. Covenant cut the deficit down to 10 points at 50-40 with 17:05 left after a pair of free-throws from McGriff and five minutes later made it a nine-point margin when Sears connected on 1-of-2 from the charity stripe.

Maryville would have the final answer, though, when Joey Bodewig converted a conventional three-point play that pushed the Maryville lead to 66-51. Covenant would only get as close as 12 points the rest of the way.

Donald Rucker came off the bench to lead Maryville in scoring with 22 points, while grabbing a team-high nine rebounds and four steals. Reigning GSAC Player of the Week Christian Ford scored 18 points and dished out eight assists. Wes Lambert and Milton Stanley contributed 12 points and 10 points, respectively.

Covenant will return to action on Saturday with their first home game in nearly a month. The Scots will take on GSAC foe LaGrange College at 4 p.m.
