Scots Defeated By Roanoke College

SALEM, Va. -- Three Covenant players scored in double digits, but that was not enough to overcome Roanoke College as the Maroons came away with an 81-63 win on Friday afternoon in Salem. Covenant drops to 4-7 on the season, while the Maroons improve to 3-6.

Joey Danek led the way with 16 points and nine rebounds for the Scots. Danek was accompanied in double digits by Rosbie Mutcherson (11 points) and Colton McGriff (10 points). McGriff also added seven rebounds.

Roanoke jumped out to a quick 9-2 lead in the early minutes of the contest, but the Scots fought back and tied the game at 11 apiece after a 3-pointer by Bryant Engbers with 13:22 left in the first half. Over the next four minutes the Maroons outscored Covenant 14-2 to gain a 25-13 advantage. Roanoke then cruised to a 45-31 halftime lead.

In the second half, the Scots cut the deficit to nine points on several occasions, but could get no closer than that. A layup from Danek at the 5:43 mark of the second half made it 65-56 in favor of Roanoke, but again the Maroons had an answer as they scored nine quick points to bring the lead back to 18 points.

Logan Singleton led Roanoke in scoring with 21 points, 18 of which came in the first half, while grabbing six rebounds. Kwasi Amponsah added 15 points, Clay Lacy had 14 points, and Julian Ramirez chipped in 10 points and four assists off the bench. The Maroons hit 51.8 percent (29-56) from the field and 17-for-29 from the foul line.

Covenant had a rough game shooting as they managed just 29.6 percent (21-71) from the floor and 3-for-23 from behind the 3-point line. At the free-throw line, Covenant was 18-for-26 thanks to perfect efforts from Mutcherson (7-7), McGriff (3-3), and Teron Ferguson (2-2). The Scots outrebounded the Maroons 49-41, including 20-8 on the offensive side.

Covenant will have a quick turnaround as they will face Ferrum College tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m.
