OAKLAND CITY, Ind. -- Tyler Morrison scored a hat trick in Friday's 4-2 semifinal victory over Asbury University to help the Scots soccer team advance to the NCCAA Mid-East Region Championship game. The Scots (8-9-2) will play Oakland City University on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. for the Mid-East crown and an automatic bid to the national tournament.
Morrison opened up the scoring for Covenant in the 9th minute of play with a goal that was assisted by Gordon Carpenter and Ryan Parr. Within minutes, the Scots struck again with a penalty kick goal that junior Chris Pifer converted to double the lead.
Asbury got on the board in the 30th minute when Trent Popp scored a penalty kick of his own. Each of Asbury's goals in the contest came via penalty kick as Popp scored another late in the game.
Morrison found the net twice more in the early going of the second half. Johnny Frame and Todd Fleming earned assists on the first – which came in the 52nd minute – while Garrison Dale earned the assist on the second.
Host Oakland City University defeated Trevecca Nazarene 3-0 in its semifinal and will face the Scots Saturday at 2:30 p.m. for the title.
