OAKLAND CITY, Ind -- The Covenant Scots were one win away from going back to the NCCAA Men's Soccer National Tournament for a second year in a row, but Oakland City University had other ideas. Carlos Castano's golden goal in the 99th minute gave the Oaks a 1-0 win over the Scots and the Mid-East title.
Despite being outshot 23-3, including 13-1 in shots on goal, Covenant was able to stick around in the match. Keeper John Eger recorded nine saves and got help from the Scots defense to diffuse several more scoring opportunities that the Oaks had.
In the overtime period, Castano received a pass from Sascha Schmidt and laced a hard ground shot that just got by a diving Eger for the game-winner.
With the loss, Covenant's record goes to 8-10-2. The Scots will have to wait for word from the NCCAA on at-large bids. Covenant went to the national tournament last season after receiving an at-large bid to participate as the tournament's number one seed.
