WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The Covenant volleyball team traveled to Winston-Salem, North Carolina on Saturday to first play Salem College and then Maryville College. The Lady Scots defeated Salem in 3 games (25-22, 25-13, 25-17). The second match was against Maryville College, and though all the games were close, Covenant could not pull off the win and lost 3-1 (25-22, 20-25, 25-23, 25-20).
As the ladies competed in the first match, Jessie Jakes and Erica Adams tied for the most kills, earning 15 each. Kristin Dahlstrand made the majority of these kills possible as she recorded 35 assists for Adams, Jakes, and others to spike. On the defensive side of the net, Estes Carlson (13) and Jakes (14) led the team in digs.
The second match of the day was against Maryville College, who offered the ladies some tough competition. The Lady Scots lost the first match, and then rebounded to win the second. The third and fourth were won by Maryville to earn the victory. Covenant earned 6 blocks, while Maryville was able to match them, earning 7. Kills from Adams (17), Jakes (14), and Emily Stewart (12) helped to keep the scores of the games tight.
Covenant's record is now 11-5 with a 4-2 record in the Great South. The ladies' next competition is at Birmingham Southern College at 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
