LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Though Covenant played with sloppiness at the beginning of the night, the Lady Scots volleyball team eventually recovered to earn the win against Emory & Henry College Thursday night. The ladies suffered from some miscommunication during the second game, but retaliated quickly and left little chance for the visiting Lady Wasps, winning three games to one (25-19, 21-25, 25-12, 25-18).
The first game went mostly back and forth until Covenant took a 17-12 lead after winning five straight points. During that run, Jessie Jakes had a pair of kills. In the second game, the Lady Scots attacked at a dismal .154 rate while allowing Emory & Henry a match-high 16 kills.
Despite losing the second game, Covenant returned in the third revitalized. At the hands of Emily Stewart's serve, the Lady Scots opened the game with a 10-2 lead. Covenant continued to do well and eventually won 25-12. Jakes and Erica Adams combined for seven kills late in the game.
In the final game, Covenant used a streak of 10 points to bring its lead to 13-5, having trailed 5-3. That streak would give them a lead the Lady Scots would not relinquish.
Covenant's defense after the second game played much better, earning 11 blocks to Emory & Henry's 4. Jakes and Adams tied for 14 kills each.
Emory & Henry's Jamie Cockerham had an astonishing 23 kills for the night.
Kristin Dahlstrand earned 36 assists while E & H's Fallon Davis had 40. Emory & Henry's record drops to 14-9 while Covenant's is now 17-6.
The ladies' next games are against Agnes Scott and Piedmont Colleges on Saturday. Covenant will play matches at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
