Scots Shutout By Chargers, Lose 2-0

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Led by two goals that came in the late minutes of each period, the University of Alabama-Huntsville Chargers came away with a 2-0 win over Covenant on a chilly Saturday night at Scotland Yard. The loss drops the Scots to 2-5-2 for the season, while UAH improves to 5-3 on the year.

The Chargers' first goal came in the 40th minute of the match when Ragnar Gunnarsson found Cyprin Kanneh who then got his shot past Covenant keeper John Eger to give UAH a 1-0 lead. The visitors took that lead deep into the second period before they notched another goal in the 84th minute, from Kyle Simmons, to gain a 2-0 advantage that would hold up the rest of the match.

Covenant had few opportunities in the first 45 minutes of action as the Scots could manage just three shots, including a David Huertas shot that ricocheted off the crossbar. The Scots' intensity went up in the second period, but scoring was still hard to come by.

A corner kick from Garrison Dale in the 57th minute eventually led to a Hunter Harrison shot attempt that came up empty. Then in the 60th minute, Covenant had two good looks at the goal but Dale's shot and Chris Pifer's header were both saved by Chargers keeper Kel Markert. Just a few minutes later Markert saved yet another Dale attempt leading to more frustration for the Scots.

The Scots outshot the Chargers 11-10 but it was to no avail on this night. Eger had 2 saves for Covenant in the match while allowing 2 goals. Chargers keeper Markert was a thorn in Covenant's side all night as he saved 4 shots in the second half, including three from Dale alone, in keeping the Scots scoreless.

Covenant will return to action on Wednesday, October 5 at 7:00 p.m. when they host Emory University at Scotland yard.
