Double-Overtime Goal Dooms Scots

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- For the second time in nearly two weeks, the Covenant Scots lost a match in the final few minutes of the second overtime period. On September 24, Covenant was beaten by Centre College on a goal in the 109th minute and on Wednesday night it was Emory University's turn to deal the Scots a tough loss.

Dylan Price's header that found the corner of the net in the 107th minute of action gave the visiting Eagles a 1-0 victory over Covenant. The Scots have now dropped two contests in a row and see their record fall to 2-6-2 for the season. Emory, meanwhile, improves to 6-4 on the year.

Covenant was certainly not lacking in intensity on the pitch throughout the match. However, the Scots were outshot 21-12 on the night as it seemed Emory had the ball on their side of the field for the majority of the contest. Emory had several opportunities to score earlier in the match, but a collective defensive effort from Covenant was key in keeping the Eagles off the scoreboard.

The Scots had their best chance to score in the 38th minute when Matt Hudnut received a pass from midfield and got by a few Emory defenders before ripping a shot that was just off the mark as it hit the post. For a few moments there was a scramble for the ball after the ricochet, but Emory gained control to thwart the Covenant attack.

Covenant survived a barrage of shots from Emory in the second period as the Eagles took nine shots in the period, four of which were saved by Covenant keeper John Eger. The Scots had a couple of chances of their own to score, but two Hunter Harrison attempts were saved by Emory keeper Alex Wong.

After neither team had much of a threat to score in the first overtime session, Covenant's Garrison Dale had an opportunity to give the Scots the win in the 105th minute but again Wong was there for the Eagles to keep the match tied. Finally, in the 107th minute, Price took a cross from Jeffrey Cochran and knocked it into the net for the game-winner.

Eger saved 10 shots on the night, while his counterpart Wong from Emory had 3 saves. Tyler Morrison led all Scots with 3 shots taken with Harrison and Dale each taking 2 apiece.

Covenant returns to the pitch on Saturday night when they take on Union University at 7:00 p.m. at Scotland Yard. The match is part of Homecoming Weekend at Covenant College and fireworks will follow shortly after the contest.
