LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. -- Covenant men's soccer was upended in the late stages of the second half by Johnson, 2-1, at Scotland Yard on Saturday evening.
Henry Parker notched the goal for the Scots (0-2-0), with an assist from
Sam Conrad, in the 54th minute, while
J.T. Gard made six saves in net. Conrad, Parker, and
Carter Weekley posted the shots on goal for the night.
In a match that was chippy from the get-go, it was Covenant who attempted to draw first blood, but Conrad's third minute shot was saved. Unable to put any more shots on goal the remainder of the half, the Scots relied on their defense, which held for the first 40 minutes, but a goal by Johnson's Ru Reh made it 1-0 at the half.
Early in the second half, Covenant was again aggressive offensively, finally breaking through on a lovely run by Conrad, who crossed the ball to an open Parker to tie it at one in the 54th minute.
Not five minutes later, the Scots tried to untie the score on two occasions, with Weekley and Parker firing shots on net, but the Royals' (2-0-0) Jose Cogollo was up to the task.Â
In the 73rd minute, Johnson's offense started to get going, drawing a yellow card and a free kick in the 74th minute, which led to Vicenzo Barbosa's go-ahead goal. the Royals held off the Scots the rest of the way, with Covenant unable to generate any late runs.
Johnson ended the match with 22 shots, nine of which were on net, with their keeper Cogollo making three saves to earn the win in net.
