Early First-Half Goal Upends Men's Soccer

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. -- Covenant men's soccer gave up an early first-half goal and could not knot it up, falling 1-0 to Washington & Lee at Scotland Yard on Friday evening.

The Scots (0-3) put up six shots, but none on net, while Noah Jones, Sean Freace, and Daniel Wallis played all 90 minutes defensively.

At the 3:05 mark of the first half, Covenant allowed the Generals (3-1) to gain an opportunity inside the zone, where Rowan Sellers put one away to give Washington & Lee the early advantage.

The Generals attempted to add on just a few minutes later, but keeper J.T. Tolson, making his first career start in net, made the stop. Tolson would add another pair of saves in the 18th and 25th minutes to keep the Scots in it.

Noah Jones received the first shot chance for Covenant in the 26th minute, but missed up top, and then Brian Burke attempted one of his own in the 41st minute, but was off the mark as well as the half ended 1-0.

The arguable best chance for the Scots came in the 51st minute, as a beautiful centering pass from Jonathan Welsh found the foot of Jackson Bostrom, whose back-footed kick made it past the keeper Miles Furman, but rolled just wide left.

Freshman Cooper O'Connor then had a chance in the 73rd minute, as he made a creative move around the defense, but his left-footed shot was pushed too high.

That would be the final chance for Covenant, as the Generals' defense held on from there.

Tolson made a career-high six saves for the Scots during the evening, while Isaac Arrowood and Ricardo Sanchez assisted on Sellers' goal.
