LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. -- Covenant volleyball battled with No. 8 Berry, but their comeback effort came up short as they fell, 3-1, at Barnes PE Center on Tuesday evening.
Aubrianna Gerdes set a career-high with 18 kills to pace the Scots (13-2), while
Evy Hammer had a season-best 27 assists and
Henley Gentry tallied 17 digs.
Cali Sandhoff added a 10-assist, 12-dig effort as well.
In the first two sets, the Vikings (10-2) proved their national ranking, taking the sets, 25-14 and 25-17, to put Covenant in an early 2-0 hole.
As the third set opened, the Scots turned it up to a different gear, going up 9-4, thanks to two kills from each of Gerdes and
Avery Maiden. Berry kept it close initially, but then a 8-3 stretch, which included two kills from
Gabby Sumrall, opened it up to a 21-13 advantage.
Later, leading 24-17, Covenant watched as the Vikings cobbled together a 6-0 run to close it to 24-23, however, Sumrall saw enough and punched down a kill to end the set, 25-23.
The fourth set was tight throughout, as the two squads traded points and were deadlocked at 10 apiece. Berry then used a 8-3 run to open up an 18-13 lead, but the Scots fought back late to close the gap to 24-23, thanks to three consecutive kills from Gerdes and back-to-back kills from Sumrall.
However, Berry mustered together a final attack, getting a kill from Madie Whitehead to end the match, 25-23.Â
Whitehead led the Vikings with 22 kills and a .500 htting percentage, while Ava Brovet had 41 assists and Andrea Hurt had 16 digs.
