LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. --
AT Simon drilled a second-half goal to draw even with Piedmont and force a draw, 1-1, at Scotland Yard on Saturday evening.
The goal was the second of Simon's career, as the Scots (1-3-2, 0-0-1) began conference play without suffering a loss.
The first half began well for the Lions (3-1-1, 0-0-1 CCS), who were able to score just 4:08 in on a goal by Keira Ferrera, assisted by Alison Witkiewicz. They then followed up with another shot on goal just 51 seconds later, which Covenant keeper
Bronwyn Kickasola kept out of the net.
The Scots then created a run in the 12th minute, getting a pair of shots from
Tess Duble and one from
Elle Cherry, but all missed the mark, with Jordan Atkinson making one save for Piedmont.
The Lions attempted another pair of shots later in the half, but Kickasola made a pair of saves to keep it 1-0, which was where the score stayed until the half.
In the second half, a re-energized Scots unit generated a ton of opportunities early on, as Duble and
Lila Wiley fired shots less than five minutes in, but did not find success.
Then Simon entered the fray.
After a Piedmont foul, Simon took a free kick from the right side of the field, and the ball sailed just off the fingertips of Atkinson and into the top left corner to tie it up.
The rest of the half was a frenzy, as both teams looked to untie the score.
Campbell Ayres had a chance in the 68th minute, but her header went wide, then Simon tried another deep shot, but was denied by Atkinson. Duble, Ayres, and
Georgie Strawbridge all tried shots late as well, but did not sneak any by before the match ended.
In total, Kickasola made four saves, while Atkinson made six saves for Piedmont.
