Men's Soccer Outlasts Vikings For 2-1 Win

MOUNT BERRY, Ga. -- Covenant men's soccer notched a pair of first-half goals and then held on defensively, outlasting the Berry Vikings 2-1 on Thursday evening.

Joshua Romero scored his first career goal at the 37:00 mark to give Covenant (1-5-0) the initial advantage, and then Brian Burke recorded his second career goal just 50 seconds later to give the Scots a lead they would not relinquish.

Both teams were active offensively in the early going, as Daniel Osho of Berry (3-3-0) and Jackson Bostrom each forced their opponent's keeper to make a save in the first 10 minutes. A quiet 27 minutes followed, and then Covenant broke through with Romero taking a pass from Isaiah Harper and rifling a shot from outside the 18' into the left side of the net.

Not even a minute later, Burke capitalized on a feed from Lyndon Tucker to give the Scots a 2-0 advantage, which would hold until the end of the half.

The second half relied on the defense, as the offense was limited in their opportunities to extend the lead. Berry did get a goal to drop through in the 55th minute, as Cullen Maas put one in to make it 2-1.

From that point on, the defense did its job, as J.T. Gard saved two shots and impeded several other chances, and the defense prevented any further major opportunities for the Vikings.

In total, the Scots allowed 10 shots, five on net, saving four, while they fired eight shots, five of which were on net. Joey Captain picked up the assist for Berry, while keeper Cooper Cherry had three saves.
